Happy Halloween and Happy Samhain
What is Samhain?
Samhain ( pronounced Sow’ain) is a time when the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead are said to be at its thinnest. You can actually feel the thin veil throughout the days leading up to this time. Even as the leaves fall away and the woods get clearer. This is a symbol of this feeling and thin veil lining.
It truly is a magical time of year. It is my favorite.
This is a traditional time for divination and magical workings.
Samhain marks the beginning and the end of the Wheel of the Year much the same way New Year marks the calendar new year.
Outside the traditional calendar that we now use, Samhain was once celebrated at first frost. This date would vary from region to region based on your climate. Because of our present calendar, we celebrate this on Halloween but there is a three-day window in which all Sabbats can be celebrated. ( yesterday, today, and tomorrow)
In the past, this is a time where you would make sure you were in full stock of what you needed to survive the winter months. You would go through all that you have in stock, make note of it as well as what animals you have that you felt would get you through the winter months. Did you have enough bedding? wood? logs, animals, food?
It is a tradition at this time to light a candle and place in the window for your past loved ones that have passed and honoring your ancestors, helping to guide them back to you. Candles help to deter negative spirits from entering your realm. Many have replaced this tradition with Halloween pumpkins with candles inside.
See how much we all still do this?
I have created a Tarot spread for you for this Samhain Celebration:
